Legacies
We are all custodians of our planet. For 80 years International TreeFoundation(ITF) have been protecting, promoting and planting trees to enhance our environment now, and through careful planning we believe that our efforts will continue to enhance the environment for generations to come.
Legacies are a very important source of income. A legacy gift will help us to ensure our vision of the future in which generations will inherit and enjoy forests and woodlands which will provide sustainable habitats for wild creatures, plants and wild flowers. While on a global scale, ITF tree planting grants will continue to help the world's poorest environments and societies
ITF is a UK registered charity which does not receive government funding. We are very grateful for the generosity of donors who help us to fund our overseas and climate change projects and the homeopathy wood. However, in order to continue our work and to help us counter global warming and protect and preserve this planet for our offspring we depend just as much upon the generosity of people who can help us plan for the future by leaving us a vital legacy in their will
If you would like to tell us that you have remembered ITF in your will, you can do so by filling in our 'let us know' form. We appreciate your doing so because it really helps us with our planning.
Types of Legacy
ITF welcomes any gift no matter how big or small, However different types of legacies are called:
A Pecuniary bequest
This is a gift of a fixed sum of money left to International Tree Foundation in your Will.
A Residuary bequest
This is a gift of the remainder of the estate after all other bequests have been made and debts cleared.
A Specific bequest
This is a gift of a particular named item - known as a specific bequest - for example, a piece of jewellery
A Contingent bequest
This gift in your Will depends upon the occurrence of an event which may or may not happen. An example is a bequest to a charity which applies only if other beneficiaries named in the Will die before the testator (the person who made the Will)
Making a Will
You are never too young to make a will, so if you haven't made one, don't put it off any longer. Having a will means that you have control over who benefits from your estate, and you can ensure that you provide for the people and causes that you care most about. Without a Will the law decides how your estate is distributed; this is done according to standard rules, which means that your intentions will not be taken into account.
Making a will is easy and updating it is even easier. When you do so please consider including a legacy gift to International Tree Foundation (ITF).
ITF would advise anyone making or updating a Will to get in touch with a practising solicitor to help you do this.
However, when you are making your will there are several things to be considered, such as:
- Making a list of your assets
- Thinking about the way in which you want to divide your estate
- Thinking about who to appoint as executor
If you are amending a will you will need to add a codicil. You can have as many of these as you like. However to ensure a codicil is legally binding ITF would suggest that you consult a solicitor.
Examples of wording
Should you wish to remember ITF in your Will here are some examples of wording you may wish to give to your solicitor
Pecuniary bequest (a set sum)
I give the sum of ..... pounds to International Tree Foundation (Registered Charity No 1106269) of Sandy Lane, Crawley Down, West Sussex RH10 4HS
And the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of International Tree Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
Residuary bequest (a proportion)
I give (%) of the residue of my real and personal estate which I can dispose of by Will in any manner I think proper to International Tree Foundation (Registered Charity No 1106269) of Sandy Lane, Crawley Down, West Sussex RH10 4HS and the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of International Tree Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.
It is important to ensure that the following clause is inserted, whichever wording you need to use:
If at my death any charity named a beneficiary in this Will or any Codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my Executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in it's changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made
Please also remember to use our full name International Tree Foundation.
