Wales is already rich in woodlands and has a long tradition of tree planting for both commercial uses and urban enrichment. We are seeking to preserve this heritage wherever we can.
We plant trees round new buildings when it is possible. We put rowan trees round the new Chepstow Community Hospital. We have planted a hedge and shelter belt of 100 beech trees around a woodland clearing new Abergavenny. Coleg Gwent are now using this as an outdoor classroom.
In 2004 we invited Vice-President Susan Hampshire to plant a yew tree at the museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans, near Cardiff. The mediaeval church of St Teilo is being reconstructed on this site and, for true authenticity, needed a yew tree in the churchyard.
In 2003 we all enjoyed a visit to the gardens at Highgrove to see and learn from the work being done there.
We like to encourage the younger generation to become involved in our work with trees. Links have been fostered with schools by planting trees in their grounds and working with the children. Our last venture was accomplished with the help of the girls from the Usk Brownie Pack. There is a disused railway track on the ridge of a hill above the town of Usk. We bought forty different sapling trees and had the site prepared. One Sunday afternoon in January, as part of their 60th birthday celebration, the members of the brownie pack and their families joined us at the site. Each brownie planted a tree, with some help and encouragement from us all.
We welcome new members.
Join us and help us look after the trees of Wales
