Noelle Leigh - Secretary

Please contact Noelle Leigh for further details of any of our events or with matters for the committee.

The Surrey branch has always placed education about the importance of trees as an essential part of its activities. At our AGM we have an external speaker who is an expert in some aspect relating to trees. Our secretary arranges a very varied programme of visits to tree collections where again we usually have a local guide who is very knowledgeable so as our members can learn more about trees.

In the spirit of our founder Richard St Barbe Baker members of the committee give talks and guided walks to many varied groups both young and old.

Our tree planting programme is now mainly based on our overseas project in the Philippines. For a number of years we have been supporting a charity on the Island of Leyte. The PEOPLE organisation works through local community farmers raising hundreds of seedling trees every year. These trees are used in conjunction with the farms to help protect the very vulnerable hillsides from the regular typhoons. Fruit trees are grown to generate an economic income and mangroves planted to protect the coastal areas. The harnessing of the community also helps them to come together to prevent illegal logging.
